Toughened and heat strengthened glass

TOUGHENED GLASS:

Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal treatments (up to roughly 7000C) to increase its strength compared with normal glass.

CHARACTERISTICS:

• Toughened glass is up to approximately five times stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness.

• Toughening puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension. Such stresses cause the glass, when broken, to shatter into small granular chunks which are less likely to cause injury.

APPLICATIONS:

• Suitable where safety glazing is required by building codes or design specifications

• All glass entrances and storefronts

• Extreme wind loads

• Fireplace enclosures

 

HEAT STRENGTHENED GLASS:

Heat-strengthened glass is less prone to spontaneous breakage than tempered glass. And it’s the product of choice, with the exception of instances where tempered glass or laminated glass is required by law, wind load, local or national building codes.

CHARACTERISTICS:

• Approximately triple the mechanical and thermal strength of

ordinary glass of equal thickness.

• Greater resistance to thermal loads than normal glass.

APPLICATIONS:

• Suitable for use in spandrel and/or vision areas where added

resistance to wind load and thermal stress is required.

• Laminated solariums.

• High wind load areas.

• Laminated skylights, canopies.
